Love Letter

Love Letter is a fun little card game, in which you are in love with a beautiful princess, and you must compete with other suitors for her attention. You can't enter the castle, so you wish to send her a letter. However, since not just anyone can send her a letter, you must find allies with access to the castle, who will help you to get your letter to her.

This is a very easy game to learn, and rounds are very fast-paced. No set up is required either, so that makes this a great game to bring out every now and then when friends are over, and you'll be playing within minutes. It is also lots of fun to play again and again, so I'm very happy that I made this purchase! I have a Limited Edition version of the game. This also includes a prince, so you can compete for the love of a prince instead, but I'm usually the only female playing so we always end up choosing a princess. This allows me to make jokes about the princess really being a lesbian, but she's shy about letting the whole kingdom know so she has to send tokens of affection to my competitors a bit before giving me the win.

To start the game, the deck is shuffled, and each player given one card. One card is placed down next to the remaining cards (also face down) to be left out of the round except in special situations which we'll get to shortly. Each player is also given a reference card, which lists all of the cards in the deck, what they do, and how many of each are in there. This helps players to pull off effects of the card, and to hopefully win the game. Keeping track of what's been played, and what's in the deck really helps!

First player will draw a card, then discard one card to play it's effects. The effects will aim to eliminate the other players from the round, so that the final person left in the round is the winner of that round. However if all cards are drawn and there is more than one person still in, they both reveal their cards, and the person with the highest number on their card is the winner of that round. That person gets a Token Of Affection. The number of tokens needed to win the game will depend on how many people are playing.

Earlier I mentioned a face down card which sits next to the deck. If all cards are drawn from the deck, and only that card remains, if one player then plays the wizard card, which tells someone to discard their hand and draw a new card, they then draw that extra card. This card also makes it harder to guess what other players have in their hand.

I've played this a few times now and everyone that I've played it with has enjoyed it a lot! The rounds are nice and fast and it's still fun after playing it several times. There is a bit of strategy involved, but since your hand is cycled quickly you can't really plan too far ahead. This  means you can quickly tell if you've screwed something up! I think this has seemed to suit everyone's styles.

I'm unsure what else to say about this other than that I recommend that you go and buy it to play it yourself!
