Gamers generally know that a lot of games give you the illusion that your choice matters, but in reality, they really just don't. The difference that you'll get based on your choices is often negligible. You may get a different line of dialog perhaps. Generally this is ok if it had great gameplay and story, but it can be a bit disappointing. Occasionally though, you'll come across a game which really is affected by your choices in a big way, and it feels satisfying! Below, I'll introduce you to some of these games which I've found and loved. As always, I'll keep it as spoiler free as possible.
Let's get started with Catherine.
In this puzzle platformer which will question your morals, you play as Vincent. He's been in a relationship for five years with Katherine, who wants to move on to the next level: marriage. Unsure how you feel about that, you wake up in bed with another woman: also named Catherine! During the day, you get to deal with that, and during the night, you puzzle your way through his nightmares.
Catherine has multiple very varied endings depending on your choices during the day.
Earlier this year there was a remake released which adds a new character. The English version will be released in the next couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to that!
VA-11 Hall-A is a Cyberpunk Bartender game in which you play as a bartender named Julianne. You'll interact with various customers and through discussions with them will uncover the story. Your interactions with them will determine your ending, and don't forget customer service! Remembering your regular's drink orders will help you to build relationships with your customers, and thus affect the ending that you get :)
Life is Strange
In the first Life is Strange game, you'll play as Max, a girl who has moved back to her home town to study under a photographer that she's always looked up to. However, things go downhill when she witnesses a horrible crime, and quickly realizes that she can rewind time a bit. She does this, and from here you can make choices of how you you use this power. The story is super deep and will make a lot of you cry.
This game gives us two distinct endings. At the end you can see how popular your choices were which is fun.
Life is Strange is released in "episodes", and is in its third game right now. (Although this is not including the short side game, Captain Spirit.) I'm currently waiting for the final episode of the third game to be released before playing it all in one go, but am so tempted to get started early! I just know that I'll get up to a big cliff hanger and I don't want to go through that torture. I'll probably binge it all over a weekend.
Detroit: Become Human
This is another game with rich story and characters. You'll alternate playing three characters: Connor, Markus, and Kara. Each android comes from very different backgrounds, and as they gain sentience, you choose how to react to your new-found consciousness and handle the world's reaction. I'm really wary of giving any spoilers for this one. I played it not knowing a single thing and absolutely loved it. I've played it through twice, and will likely play it again some day. My endings were hugely different with each play-through, and not just the endings but interactions throughout the game as well.
Please comment below if you have any recommendations of more games where your choices really matter and if you want to discuss the above games in the comments, please start with a spoiler warning.
